Photography In Hawaii
FAQ
This isn an interview with Owner Photographer Jerry Omo Jr of Hawaiianpix Photography on " The Questions Most People Ask About Professional Photography"
Q: How long have you been doing photography
A: “Uhm, do I have to tell you my age? No…. Ok since I was 14 yrs old. I started working in a portrait studio at the age of 16. That was 32 years ago…. Uh oh I think I just gave away my age.”
Q: What do you think defines your style of photography?
A: “ Mind if I coin a phrase here, I would say we are Casual Classic. I love the old masters style of lighting and I also love to see it when people are being themselves, comfortable. No matter how hard you try, that can’t be faked in a photograph, when these 2 elements come together, they are Casual Classic.”
Q: What is your favorite subject to shoot?
A: “ That’s an easy one, we love to shoot FUN subjects, people, products, events what ever. Everyone knows that there is a time to be serious but even that can be Fun if you want it to be. We have laughed with some very high profile business owners and little kids alike.”
Q: Is there something that sets you apart from your competition? If so What?
A: “Sure there is. I think that Hawaiianpix is uniquely qualified to handle our customers’ needs because of our tri-product approach to our business.” 1) Education 2) Photography 3) Pro Lab Service. We operate each of these parts independently and symbiotically. Each compliments the other allowing us to offer our clients a diverse set of photographically related products and services.
Q: Can you talk about each of those parts?
A: “ Well lets start with the instruction, we have been teaching photography through the University of Hawaii since 1993. This aspect of our business keeps us up to date with the latest camera equipment and techniques that photographers need to use every day. The photography part is how it all began and really the passion that drives the rest of the business I just love to be creative and I think that is my outlet. Finally, the online professional lab part was just a natural progression. I have run photographic laboratories for Konica and the Wal-mart Corporation and was a quality control supervisor at Kodak in my early years. It just seemed the best way to insure highest quality images for our clients was to print our work for them.”
Q: Ok the basic questions always have to be asked, Do you offer retouching, black and white, packages, albums, a quick turn around time and can I get my images on a disk?
A: ” Wow that’s a lot of questions ….but I guess the short answer is YES to all of them. We will work with our customers and no two are alike, to insure they are getting the products and services they want. Really most of the questions folks ask are answered for them in our consultations either on the phone or in person. Just call us up, we’ll be happy to answer your questions for you.”
Q: If you had advice for someone looking for a photographer what would you tell them?
A: “ I would tell them to be comfortable with their photographer. We all have memories of doing our school pictures or pictures at the mall. While those photos are a way to record your station in life, they aren’t exactly fun or comfortable. Your photographer should be both. You should enjoy your session with them as much as the photographs they produce for you. We strive to be that for our clients because happy, relaxed clients take great photographs.”
